Soon, some permanent residents and citizens of Canada will be able to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence. On July 28, 2025, the federal government will begin inviting possible sponsors.

Over the course of two weeks, the government will send out 17,860 invites, with the goal of receiving 10,000 completed applications this year. All prospective sponsors who filled out an interest in sponsoring form in 2020 will receive invitations. The super visa program, which grants visitor status for a maximum of ten years, allows prospective sponsors who do not obtain invites to sponsor their relatives.

The Parents and Grandparents Program: An Overview

A route to permanent residency for family reunification is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Parents or grandparents may be sponsored for permanent residence under the PGP by qualifying Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians.

The government invites potential sponsors through a lottery system, since there is more demand for the program than there are slots available. Before they can seek to sponsor their relatives under the PGP, sponsors must first get an invitation.

Submissions for interest-to-sponsor forms were first accepted by the PGP in 2020, and they have not been accepted again. All prospective sponsors who filled out interest-in-sponsor forms for the 2020 intake have received invitations to apply under the PGP.

Regarding the super visa:

Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the possibility to stay in Canada for a long time with their parents or grandparents thanks to the super visa.

Any qualified host may sponsor one or more relatives to visit them in Canada under the super visa program.

For a maximum of ten years, the super visa might grant visiting status.

Normal visitor status in Canada, on the other hand, is normally granted for a maximum of six months.

The applicant must be admitted to Canada and obtain qualifying health insurance in order to be eligible for the super visa. The host must meet minimal income requirements and pledge to provide for their relative or relatives during their stay.
