Express Entry High-Wage Points: A Profile Checklist for November 2026

Quick answer: From November 3, 2026, IRCC will compare two scores under a new Labour Market Integration factor: eligible Canadian work experience, including any high-wage experience points, or a qualifying high-wage job offer. It uses the higher score. The occupation's national wage level, not your individual pay, determines its tier.

On October 16, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced changes to Express Entry ranking. For workers in Edmonton and across Alberta, the practical question is what your documents support, not whether your job title sounds well paid.

Existing profiles will be recalculated automatically. IRCC says this may take up to two weeks, with invitation rounds paused during that period. See IRCC's detailed explanation.

Step 1: Match your duties to an eligible occupation

Find the National Occupational Classification (NOC) code that reflects your actual duties. Then check that code against IRCC's high-wage occupation list. A title alone does not establish eligibility.

IRCC groups eligible NOCs by how their Canadian median wage compares with the overall Canadian workforce benchmark: at least 1.3 times, 1.5 times, or twice the benchmark. A high individual salary does not place an unlisted occupation on the list. If the list changes after an invitation, IRCC says it uses the level that applied on the invitation date.

Keep evidence of your work

Gather employer letters describing duties, employment dates and hours. Keep pay records, contracts and other evidence that supports what you claim. A listed NOC does not replace the underlying Express Entry program requirements.

Step 2: Compare the two scoring routes

The experience option combines points for the length of qualifying Canadian work experience with any high-wage experience points. The other option is points for a qualifying high-wage job offer. IRCC uses the higher option. It does not add the two together.

For high-wage experience points, at least 12 months or 1,560 hours of qualifying Canadian work in eligible high-wage occupations is required. Higher tiers require enough eligible experience at that tier or above. Eligible experience may be combined across jobs, and concurrent hours count only up to 30 hours per week. Existing Canadian experience requirements still apply.

Example: compare the full experience option

A candidate without an accompanying spouse has two years of qualifying Canadian work experience, including at least one year in a 1.3-times occupation. The experience option is 53 points for duration plus 20 high-wage experience points, or 73. If the same candidate also has a qualifying 1.5-times job offer worth 70 points, the factor uses 73. This illustration is not a complete CRS calculation.

The factor is capped at 150 points without an accompanying spouse or common-law partner and 140 with one. An increased score does not guarantee an invitation.

Step 3: Check the offer, not just the work permit

A qualifying job offer generally must be genuine, full-time and continuous for at least one year after permanent residence. Different rules can apply to skilled trades and certain physicians. A work permit by itself is not a job offer. Review the IRCC job offer requirements for your program.

From November 3, an LMIA is not required for a qualifying offer for the new Express Entry points. A temporary public policy also removes LMIA and LMIA exemption requirements for eligible Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates invited on or after that date, subject to its conditions. Officers still assess whether an offer is genuine and whether the employer can meet its terms.

A valid offer in a non-high-wage occupation may still help meet program eligibility even though it does not earn the new job offer points. Express Entry changes do not automatically remove separate work permit, employer or Alberta program requirements.

The temporary online form workaround

IRCC says its online system will not yet reflect the new rules on November 3. For a qualifying offer without an LMIA, its published instructions direct applicants to select Yes for the positive LMIA question and enter specified placeholder details. This is an explicit temporary government instruction, not a real LMIA. Read the current IRCC form instructions before entering anything and follow updates. Do not invent an LMIA or apply the workaround to an unrelated question.

Step 4: Prepare before recalculation

  1. Check that your NOC matches your duties and appears on the official list if claiming high-wage points.

  2. Confirm dates, hours and evidence for Canadian experience. Do not double-count overlapping hours.

  3. Review written offer terms, employer details and NOC. IRCC asks candidates who may qualify for job offer points to update their profiles before November 3.

  4. Keep language results, educational assessments, passport details and other evidence current.

  5. Monitor your account during recalculation and check IRCC's latest instructions before changing a response.

If you are also considering an Alberta nomination, review AAIP processing information and our Alberta nomination planning guide. A federal scoring change does not by itself confirm Alberta eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does my salary have to reach the high-wage benchmark?

IRCC classifies the occupation using national wage data for its NOC, rather than one candidate's salary. Your job and evidence must still meet applicable program and offer requirements.

Can I add job offer points to my Canadian experience score?

No. For this factor, IRCC compares the full experience option with the qualifying job offer option and uses the higher amount.

What if my occupation is not on the high-wage list?

You may still receive points for the length of eligible Canadian work experience. A valid offer outside the list may also help with program eligibility, but it does not earn the new high-wage offer points.

Will my score change immediately on November 3?

IRCC says recalculation may take up to two weeks, with invitation rounds paused during that period. Check your account and official updates.

Does this change remove the need for a work permit?

No. Permission to work is a separate question. Depending on the circumstances, an LMIA or other work authorization requirements may still apply outside the Express Entry offer assessment.
